The SOHC Pinto engine was introduced in 1970 and fitted to various Ford models, including the Cortina, RS2000, Sierra, and Transit. Ford's investment in motorsport with the RS2000 led to a proliferation of tuning parts, making the Pinto a tuner's favourite worldwide. The 2.0L engine is a popular choice, particularly with the 205 blocks. This block is well suited for 2.1L conversions and offers a maximum rebore of 93mm. Cortina blocks typically have limited capacity information stamped on the side (16 and 20 respectively), while later Sierra blocks feature capacities of 165, 185 and 205cc. For high-performance builds, new alloy blocks are now available. The original equipment crankshaft is capable of 7,500 rpm. For ultimate performance builds, we recommend using steel components. Finally, for an ultimate high revving engine, short pistons and long rods are available that can transform the performance potential. With the correct selection of parts and proper tuning the SOHC Pinto engine has the potential to exceed the 200bhp barrier.
